Film Synopsis

In the Boston area, three organizers confront threats to their homes, workplaces, and communities - each utilizing the strategy of resist and build to fight back and win collective ownership.

Khalil, an organizer with the Youth Justice and Power Union, organizes to defund the police in a city increasingly funding law enforcement. A continuation of the 2020 Black Lives Matter movement, Khalil’s story shows the importance of continuing his work as different struggles weave in and out of the forefront of mass movements.

May, a union organizer, leads her coworkers in transforming a fight for better working conditions and threatened workplace closure into a worker-run cooperative. Their hard-won victory required creativity, collaboration, and relentless perseverance - and the work continues as they keep building and growing the co-operative.

Yvette, a longtime housing organizer with City Life Vida Urbana, faces eviction when her landlord plans to sell her home. Drawing on the community values rooted in her upbringing, she and her neighbor partner with a local land trust to secure permanent, affordable housing. Their triumph reflects both struggle and the ongoing work of building lasting community relationships.

The three meet at a roundtable to share strategies, reflect on wins and setbacks, and envision a future where people, not profit, are prioritized. Their stories illuminate how working people, through collective effort, can challenge systemic injustice, reclaim control over their lives, and shape a future where housing, work, and public resources serve the many, not the few.

We hope to see you at the Labor Conference to watch A Collective Future, and engage in the variety of programming offered by the Labor Resource Center at UMass Boston. For more information about the conference’s programming, visit their webpage.
